Abstract

This study aims to examine the music culture of cafés in Diyarbakır city center and its socio-cultural impacts. Conducted using a field study method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the interview questions were meticulously prepared based on expert opinions to ensure the study's validity and reliability. The study emphasizes that cafés serve as "third places" that foster interaction and strengthen social bonds regardless of age, gender, or social status. The research provides a detailed analysis of the music selection processes in cafés, exploring the strategic and aesthetic approaches behind these choices. The findings indicate that café managers prioritize factors such as alignment with the atmosphere, compatibility with the customer profile, and reinforcement of spatial identity when selecting music. Music is identified not merely as a background element but as a crucial interaction tool that facilitates relaxation, socialization, and a sense of belonging among individuals in the café setting. The results highlight that music shapes the ambiance of cafés, enhances customer satisfaction, and supports community formation. The study demonstrates that the music culture of cafés extends beyond individual experiences, significantly influencing broader social dynamics. In this context, it aims to provide valuable insights for the academic field as well as practical guidance for café managers and cultural planners.
