Abstract

In this article, I will try to address, based on some examples from the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art, the role of a museum in creating and shaping a national culture and the desire to be added to international art and culture. MMCA (Macedonian Museum of Modern Art) was founded in 1979 after a major earthquake in Thessaloniki in 1978 and became the first modern art museum of Thessaloniki. MMCA it reveals a cosmopolitan museum understanding, as a modern museum that the museum created by the works of international artists who helped to support the contemporary identity of the city of Thessaloniki and therefore of Greece. In addition, the role of Alexander Iolas, an internationally acclaimed collector, is crucial to the establishment of the museum and the collection of artifacts. This article presents a research on the intellectual personality of Alexander Iolas with the Museum of Modern Art of Macedonia.
