Neue Chancen für Frauen in Nachkriegsgesellschaften?: Der Fall Ruanda

Abstract

Gewalttätige Konflikte behindern die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und Armutsbekämpfung eines Landes erheblich. Allerdings können Konflikte auch Auslöser für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen sein. Dieser Wochenbericht untersucht am Beispiel Ruandas, wie Frauen nach einem gewalttätigen Konflikt neue wirtschaftliche Verantwortlichkeiten übernehmen. In dem kleinen zentralafrikanischen Binnenstaat wurde 1994 ein Genozid verübt, bei dem mehr Männer als Frauen ums Leben kamen. Dies wirkte sich auf unterschiedliche Weise auf die Frauen aus. Viele Witwen wurden zu Haupternährern ihres Haushalts und übernahmen neue wirtschaftliche Aufgaben. Im Gegensatz dazu entsprechen sowohl verheiratete als auch ledige Frauen weiter der traditionellen Frauenrolle in Ruanda. Für letztere könnte dies eine Strategie sein, um ihre Heiratschancen zu verbessern.
