Abstract
This paper examines the role of industrial relations in the socio-ecological transition and, in particular, in the decarbonization of the German economy. It shows that by using cooperative practices within established industrial relations, social partners can contribute to the formulation and implementation of strategies that promote sustainability, reduce emissions and advance the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. With an institutionalized decision-making and consensus-building process, the social partnership has important tools that can contribute to the successful implementation of climate change policies in Germany. In this way, public policy goals can be achieved while taking into account the interests of both workers and employers. We argue that the German economic model is better suited to handle the ecological transition than the Anglo-Saxon model. This is because it can reduce conflict costs and enable innovative co-design of transformation measures.
