Abstract
This study empirically examines wherever trust in a bank-to-SME relationship supports sustainable credit availability. The results of a survey of entrepreneurs in Switzerland support the hypothesis that mutual trust between the SME and bank improves sustainable credit availability. This finding was confirmed by a triangulation survey of account managers. It is concluded that not the duration of a relationship but the account manager’s level of trust and his industry-specific experience determine the SME debt securing significantly. It is therefore likely that an SME with a given credit rating and collateral affect their access to sustainable bank financing through positive relationship-related factors.
