Abstract
Crowdsourcing represents a new option for small and medium enterprises (SME) to generate improvements in efficiency and effectiveness while avoiding high risk taking. This article deals with the current status quo of the academic literature on Crowdsourcing and its characteristics, which are systematically presented and discussed. Based on minor existing scientific publications three characteristics of Crowdsourcing can be identified: 1. Crowdcreation, 2. Crowdfunding, 3. Crowdvoting. Derived from other academic and scientific disclosures, Technical Tasks are added to these characteristics. Having these characteristics in mind specific examples for SMEs are given and discussed. This work is completed with an outlook on further research in this field.
