Abstract
One of the focal points that businesses are currently facing around the globe is how to overcome company-wide crisis situations. This also holds true for franchise systems operating in Germany, as impressively illustrated by lately ailing legal advice firm juraXX or subway, the franchise fast-food system. These failures could have been avoided by a centrally controlled risk management system. A qualitative empirical study conducted among German franchisees confirms those findings. The study also suggests that German franchisors as well as franchisees are currently not assuming a pioneering task when it comes to managing crises in a network context. Furthermore, results show that crisis management systems are set up rather heterogeneously. On top of that, this article derives a number of practical implications for franchisers and provides grounds for further researching this rather complex and yet less explored subject matter.
