Abstract

The article discusses factors that contribute to increasing competitiveness of a sector that has encountered substantial structural change in the past. We analyze how far public programs on collective research are used by enterprises and research institutes in the German textile innovation system to open up new market segments by developing new products. The results indicate that SMEs in the textile industry remain competitive if they participate in public programs, keep regular contacts with the relevant research institutes and if both partners adjust their research strategies.
