Abstract

Trans-Abstract: The article examines the role of industrial or economic citizenship rights for the democratization of work. Gainful employment as a central place of social integration shapes individuals’ attitudes towards democracy. The experiences that are made in the context of gainful employment and the scope for action that gainful employment opens up for workers structure material, social and democratic participation. Many empirical studies show that all three aspects are associated with anti-democratic attitudes. People for whom gainful employment enables material participation, who experience social recognition in the context of gainful employment and who experience the opportunities for democratic co-determination there, tend to have less anti-democratic attitudes. There is a need for research into the role played by the institutions of co-determination, in particular works councils.
