Abstract

La historia de precios de Iberoamérica colonial ha dejado atrás sus tambaleantes comienzos con bastante lentitud. Hoy presenta una masa crítica de resultados globales, aunque todavía imperfecta y frágil en muchos aspectos. Los trabajos reunidos en el libro no pretenden establecer un estado de la cuestión, pero permiten seguir las principales secuencias de esa evolución historiográfíca y ofrecen un panorama completo de sus resultados actuales. Como afirma Coatsworth, uno de los colaboradores, el relativo descuido de la historia de precios en esta parte del mundo, en contraste con Europa y Estados Unidos, ha constituido un importante obstáculo para el avance de la historia económica de América Latina colonial. Esto amplifica el impacto del libro, en sí mismo un importante y completo aporte historiográfico, que se ha convertido en ineludible instrumento de trabajo. Su reciente traducción al castellano es una excelente noticia.
