El Banco Grameen como impulsor del microcrédito. Rasgos destacados y cuestionamientos a este tipo de iniciativas

Abstract

El impulso que ha tenido el microcrédito en las últimas décadas está dado por la aparición del Banco Grameen en Bangladés, donde, por iniciativa privada, el profesor -hoy banquero- Muhammad Yunus ha mostrado resultados destacados. El microcrédito ha sido concebido como una estrategia dirigida hacia la población de menores ingresos, como un apoyo en capital para mejorar sus condiciones, al favorecer el autoempleo, la producción a pequena escala y, en algunos casos, el ahorro. Los elementos que se destacan en este tipo de programas son: el trabajo en equipo, el enfoque hacia la mujer y la confianza hacia los beneficiarios. El objetivo del artículo es describir tales elementos destacados, al tiempo en que se presentan algunos cuestionamientos de tipo descriptivo que vale la pena hacer en esta materia, con el fin de matizar los alcances de las microfinanzas.
