Família, finanças e poder no Brasil: a trajetória do grupo Itaú (1943-2008)

Abstract

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a trajetória do grupo Itaú no período compreendido entre 1943, ano em que foi fundado o Banco Central de Crédito, e 2008, quando foi realizada a fusão com o Unibanco. Controlado pelas famílias Setúbal e Villela, o Itaú transformou-se, ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, em um dos mais poderosos grupos econômicos do Brasil. A hipótese defendida no texto é de que a trajetória do Itaú deve ser compreendida a partir de três grandes fases: 1) origem em um banco de atuação regional, o Banco Central de Crédito; 2) expansão, bene­ficiada pela política de conglomeração bancária da Ditadura Militar, e 3) consolidação, com a participação nos processos de privatização dos bancos estaduais na segunda metade da década de 1990.
