Análisis comparativo de la pobreza en las fronteras de México: aplicación del coeficiente de Engel

Abstract

Este artículo hace un análisis comparativo de la frontera norte y sur de México a través del coeficiente de Engel, para dos líneas de pobreza distintas: capacidades y patrimonio. Este coeficiente permite apreciar la cantidad de gasto que se efectúa en alimentos respecto de otros bienes y del gasto disponible total, por lo que ofrece una perspectiva sobre la pobreza en términos monetarios. Los datos para analizar y realizar los cálculos del coeficiente se obtuvieron de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares de México (ENIGH) 2016. El trabajo resulta relevante pues no existe en la literatura académica disponible un ejercicio similar de análisis de la pobreza en México a partir de este método. Entre los principales resultados se observó que —contrario a lo que la teoría y la revisión de literatura indican sobre un mejor desempeno en la generación y distribución de riqueza en la frontera norte— en términos de la línea de pobreza de capacidades no hay gran diferencia entre ambas fronteras; sin embargo, en la línea de pobreza patrimonial sí hay una marcada diferencia. Se concluye que el acceso a bienes no alimenticios como vivienda, vestido y transporte es determinante para que la pobreza en las regiones de estudio sea diferenciada.
