Calidad ambiental y su relación con el crecimiento económico en el Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá

Abstract

Resumen:Diversos estudios han explorado la relación entre crecimiento económico y calidad ambiental en un intento por corroborar que la pobreza exacerba la degradación del medio ambiente. La esperanza de que el crecimiento económico contribuye efectivamente al mejoramiento de los problemas ambientales, abriendo la posibilidad a la conformación de ambientes urbanos sostenibles, es una hipótesis que bien vale la pena confrontar desde las realidades y condiciones locales de las ciudades. Este artículo expone la discusión alrededor tal hipótesis y considera un ejercicio exploratorio entre la relación entre crecimiento económico y calidad ambiental para el caso particular del Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá.Abstract:Some studies, which explore the relation between economic growth and environmental quality, attempt to prove that poverty exacerbates environmental degradation process. Just an hypothesis worthwhile to face from local urban realities is the fact that economic growth brings an opportunity to create sustainable urban sites and contributes to improve environmental damage subjects in the long run. This writing exposes a part of the main discussion about the related hypothesis and presents some exploratory exercise results, taking account empirical relation signals of the economic growth and environmental quality improvement (or degradation) in the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area particular stage.
