Los Determinantes de la Obesidad en Colombia

Abstract

En este trabajo se exploran las asociaciones entre el Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) y características socioeconómicas del hogar en Colombia, con datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Demografía y Salud (ENDS) de 2010. Una mayor educación estuvo asociada significativamente con un menor IMC y con una menor prevalencia de sobrepeso (25≤IMC≤30) y obesidad (IMC≥30), tanto en hombres como en mujeres. La prevalencia de sobrepeso u obesidad (IMC≥25) fue igual a 47%. El IMC estuvo relacionado positivamente con una variable socioeconómica, el Índice de Riqueza, y con dos variables geográficas, la región y el clima. El exceso de peso es un problema que merece mayor atención en Colombia, por el impacto futuro que puede tener sobre los costos de la salud pública.
