Mortalidad por enfermedades isquémicas del corazón en edad laboral según tamano de ciudad: una vista a partir de las zonas metropolitanas de México

Abstract

Las zonas metropolitanas (ZM) son ciudades con alta concentración de población y actividades económicas que abarcan más de un municipio, por lo cual reúnen muchos de los factores asociados con una elevada mortalidad por enfermedades isquémicas del corazón (MEIC). En México, esta causa de muerte aumenta rápidamente en la población en edad laboral y afecta fundamentalmente zonas urbanas, entre las cuales destacan las ZM. Este artículo explora la relación entre el tamano de ciudad y el nivel de MEIC. Para hacerlo, se categorizaron las ZM en cuatro: menor de 250 000, entre 250 y 500 000, entre 500 000 y un millón y más de un millón de habitantes. Mediante una regresión lineal, que contempló como variables de control las principales causas ecológicas de riesgo de MEIC, se encontró un gradiente de incremento en el nivel de esta causa de muerte para cada tamano mayor de ciudad.
