Size, Significance, and Sources of Recent Income Inequality Changes in Chile

Abstract

Este documento analiza el tamano, significancia e impacto de la inequidaddel ingreso en Chile durante el periodo 1990-2003. En terminos generales, losresultados muestran que la distribución del ingreso en Chile se deterioró alfinal de la década de los noventa, con respecto a los primeros anos de lamisma.Cuando se mide el cambio en el grado de inequidad entre 1996 y el 2003, seencuentra que la educación es el componente más relevante de inequidad, yaque aporta entre un 20% y 40% en el caso de los asalariados y 60% en el casode los trabajadores independientes. Al principio, estas variaciones en elingreso fueron consecuencia de los grandes cambios en el salario para lostrabajadores más capacitados en los sectores primario y secundario, comotambién por el aumento de la población muy capacitada en el sector servicios,que vieron incrementados sus ingresos en el transcurso de la década delos noventa.Desde el punto de vista del consumo, se encontró que los universitariosasalariados o trabajadores por cuenta propia incrementaron sus ingresos enmás del 26% y por ende su consumo, contribuyendo así a aumentar el gradode inequidad que para el 2003 ya se había situado en un 40%.
