Abstract

A mediados del siglo XIX se evidencia uno de los procesos de inversión extranjeramás exitosos de América Latina y en particular en Colombia: la construccióny puesta en funcionamiento de la Panama Railroad Co. Esta línea férrea sedisenó y ejecutó como una ruta de paso entre los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico.Esta empresa fue una de las más rentables de su momento y reflejó de maneraclara los intereses económicos y políticos de los Estados Unidos. La empresase configuró en uno de los monopolios de transporte más importantes de laépoca, y significó uno de los recursos fiscales más apreciados por el gobiernocolombiano, presentando simultáneamente profundas asimetrías de poderentre Estados Unidos y Colombia.
