El impacto del cultivo de cacao en los niveles de pobreza: evidencia regional para el Perú, 2008-2019

Abstract

La producción de cacao en Perú ha crecido significativamente en los últimos años y se ha convertido en un factor potencial para reducir la pobreza. Esta investigación analiza el impacto del cultivo del grano sobre la pobreza de las regiones productoras, desde 2008 a 2019. La metodología empírica se basa en la estimación de modelos de regresión para datos de panel, estimando mínimos cuadrados ordinarios (MCO) para datos agrupados (MCO agrupados), efectos fijos y aleatorios. Para mitigar el efecto por omisión de variables, se incluyen variables de control y se utiliza el estimador de mínimos cuadrados en dos etapas (2SLS). Los resultados indican que un incremento de 20% en la productividad reduce la variación de la pobreza en 0.2 puntos porcentuales; sin embargo, el cambio en el precio del cacao no tiene un efecto significativo sobre la pobreza. Estos hallazgos sugieren que las políticas que mejoren la productividad del cacao pueden ser eficaces para combatir la pobreza.
