El impacto de las remesas internacionales en los gastos en salud de los hogares mexicanos

Abstract

Las remesas internacionales desempenan un papel fundamental en el gasto de los hogares. El propósito de este artículo es estimar el impacto de dichas transferencias en los gastos en salud y la carencia por acceso a los servicios de salud en los hogares mexicanos en el ámbito nacional, rural y urbano. Empleando la técnica de propensity score matching nuestros resultados sugieren que las remesas contribuyen a disminuir la carencia e incrementan los gastos que los hogares realizan en salud, aunque dichos efectos se concentran en cuestiones de atención ambulatoria. En el plano subnacional se identifican mayores efectos en el gasto de las zonas rurales y una reducción más pronunciada en la carencia en las áreas urbanas. Estos hallazgos permiten sugerir medidas de política orientadas a mejorar el acceso de los servicios de salud, lo que podría impulsar la inversión de las remesas en actividades más productivas.
