Market Responses to Antidumping Laws: Some Evidence from the U.S. Chemical Industry

Abstract

In this paper, the authors provide empirical evidence of the effects of the U.S. antidumping law using monthly product-specific macroeconomic data from the U.S. chemical industry over the 1976-88 period. They analyze import responses, highlighting the differences between allegedly dumped and nondumped import behavior at the various stages of an antidumping investigation. The authors find a wide range of behavioral responses that do not necessarily appear to be dependent upon the final outcome of the investigations and in some cases contradict the 'accepted wisdom' of the impacts these cases have upon import behavior.
