La couverture médiatique de l’immigration polarise les opinions

Abstract

En dépit de la montée des réseaux sociaux et de sources alternatives d’informations, les médias traditionnels, comme la télévision, demeurent les principales sources d’information politique en France. Leur rôle dans la formation des opinions reste donc majeur, en particulier concernant l’immigration, thème central et récurrent des débats politiques et médiatiques actuels. L’étude approfondie de la couverture médiatique de l’immigration, par les principales chaînes de télévision françaises entre 2013 et 2017, révèle que l’accroissement de la visibilité du thème migratoire aux journaux télévisés polarise les opinions en exacerbant les préjugés et en poussant les individus les plus modérés vers des positions extrêmes. Si le simple fait de parler d’immigration polarise les opinions, la mise à l’agenda médiatique de ce sujet et les interventions de type « fact-checking » doivent alors être pensées avec la plus grande prudence.
