Déséquilibres courants : le rôle complexe des inégalités de revenus

Abstract

Ces dernières décennies ont été marquées par un accroissement des inégalités de revenus dans un grand nombre de pays, tandis que les déséquilibres extérieurs s'installaient comme une thématique récurrente du débat public. Il est tentant d'établir un lien de cause à effet des inégalités sur les déséquilibres extérieurs, mais les données révèlent l’absence d'une relation univoque. À la suite d’un accroissement des inégalités, le solde courant a, en moyenne, tendance à s’améliorer pour les pays émergents et à se détériorer pour les pays avancés. Mais c’est le niveau de réglementation du crédit qui semble jouer un rôle déterminant : une hausse des inégalités accroît les soldes courants dans les pays plus réglementés et les diminue dans les pays très déréglementés.
