Kurz zum Klima: Silizium – ein Rohstoff, der es in sich hat

Abstract

Als Basisrohstoff für die Produktion etwa von Mikrochips oder Solarzellen wird Silizium immer zentraler für zahlreiche Schlüsseltechnologien. Da aber Silizium regional hoch konzentriert produziert wird, ist die weltweite Versorgung mit dem Rohstoff schwierig. Zudem ist der Produktionsprozess sehr energieintensiv und mit erheblichen negativen Wirkungen für die Umwelt verbunden. Alternative Materialien und Technologien haben schon für die nahe Zukunft sowohl aus Effizienz- wie auch Umweltgesichtspunkten großes Potenzial.
