Abstract

The vast majority of young academics in Germany have temporary employment contracts. Do foreign universities and companies offer better options for junior economists? Nadine Absenger, WSI, Dusseldorf, sees an urgent need for reform to limit, "the spread of atypical employment". According to Ernst Dieter Rossmann, SPD parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, "ridiculously short contracts should be made largely impossible" and non-scientific staff should be excluded from Germany's Temporary Science Employment Law. Cornelia Quennet-Thielen, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, explains the changes to the Temporary Science Employment Law approved in September.
