Abstract

Higher demand for electricity is a key characteristic of developed economies, but the major advantages of electrical energy come at a high price. Alongside the high capital investment required to create the requisite infrastructure, there is a growing focus on the carbon dioxide emissions related to electricity production. This article offers an overview of worldwide electricity production and of the share of fossil energy sources used in electricity production.
