Abstract

Mining, transportation and combustion of coal involves a major impact on environment, the importance of these activities being heavily dependent on different kinds of mining (underground or open cast mine), geography and ecology of damaged areas. The effects of the coal mining on adjacent environment are summarized as follows: most significant modification of the hydrostatic level of underground waters due to excavation in order to facilitate mining; modifications of the hydrological and hydro geological regime through the increase of the degree of surface water infiltration; increase in the quantity of suspended solids transported by river. There are three main sources of air pollution: emissions from the thermal plants, dust from coal handling and ventilated air from underground work. Environmental rehabilitation implies the conversion of affected areas towards agricultural or forestry utilization or to a new functional ecosystem. The main obstacle in implementing environmental measures is the scarcity of financial resources. International bodies could play a major role in this respect.
