Abstract

How do you decide to work with terminally ill patients and how do you become a palliative care unit professional? What are the profiles of the doctors, nurses and auxiliaries who commit to that type of care unit? This article demonstrates that looking at career paths and socialization at work allows a better understanding of the different levels of commitment and professionalization of work with terminally ill patients. In order to analyse these career moves and shifts, it is necessary to understand what triggered them. What emerges from this study is that the decision to get involved in palliative care is an individual commitment as well as a desire to break free from a previous professional environment.
