Abstract

The ?work object? can be defined as what gives a sense and direction to a professional activity. So, can a common work object be determined for the medical profession as a whole, given that all doctors are specialists and perform very different jobs? After examining and questioning the concept, the author attempts to capture the common element of this object, taught during the first six years of study. She then analyzes two medical specialities, general medicine and obstetrics, and demonstrates two different developments of the medical work object, strongly based on their training. We can then question the relationship between practical and theoretical training as it applies to all health professions, if not other professions.
