Abstract

The effects of gender diversity on the sexual division of labor and on careers have been sparsely studied when gender diversity is the result of the presence of men in so-called ?female? jobs. This article aims to explore these effects on the basis of a study on receptionists and focuses on how the body and sexuality, particularly involved in this activity, have an impact on gender relations at work. Both ethnographic investigations in different situations show that gendered conceptions of the body participate in the establishment of a sexual division of labor, which creates more freedom of action and less control for men in the daily work. ?Flirt? at work has various effects on reception staff. On the one hand, it helps men receptionists to preserve traditional heterosexual definition of manhood, while allowing them to leave the subordination and marginalization arising from their position in the division of labor and employment. On the other hand it keeps women receptionists in a professional isolation. The study of the careers of the reception staff is finally used to evaluate the possible existence of a ?glass escalator? for men.
