Fonction publique territoriale : de la mobilité interne à la mobilité spatiale ?

Unlike national civil servants, who are known as frequent movers, the history of the local civil service has demonstrated that local employees often have strong links with the territory where they work. This sociological approach assesses the accurateness of this analysis to describe the current local public employment. As it uses quantitative and qualitative data gathered in a French town, it shows that space mobility has been increasing whereas social mobility has been decreasing since the 1970s and 1980s. Indeed, the former is a growing requirement to the latter. This overall trend is scrutinised through social, gendered and generational patterns that differentiate public servants. Eventually, one should be convinced by the interest of career analysis to understand the managerial trend of public policies.
