Abstract

Monique Bertrand ? From Access to Housing to the Relation Between Home and the Workplace : Issues of Social and Spatial Mobility in the Greater Accra region (Ghana) The relation between home and the workplace is constrained by the importance of the informal employment and the lack of accommodations, in the Ghanaian capital : commuting to and from work were made on foot by a third of active inhabitants surveyed in 2000-2001. In a context of rapid urban spreading, this economical vulnerability cannot be limited to the opposition between central and peripheral areas, and has various aspects even in deprived communities. Discriminations in residential and daily mobility also reveal forms of resistance to territorial confinement and to distance from metropolitan resources. The question of transportation in the Greater Accra leads to consideration of the cases of those who work close to home and need no transport, those who are mobile hawkers, and those who are not assigned to a regular pattern of commuting.
