Abstract

Literature on paradox is abundant. However, it is a concept which remains vague and the analysis of its effects is neglected. Still, the stakes are high: the organizations that are locked in paradoxes would present detrimental effects on work and health. Grounded in ergonomic analysis of work, the article proposes an operationalization of the concept of paradox and its effects during the implementation of a shared services centre. The results expose paradoxes and contradictory messages, sources of detrimental effects. The notions of dilemmas, paradoxes, and ?paradoxante? organizations are discussed. The reduction of paradoxes is set as a key objective of the intervention in organizations.
