Impact des transferts sur les inégalités de revenu dans les pays de l’OCDE

Abstract

This study measures the impact of transfers on income inequalities in OECD countries. We use European and American data to show that transfers reduce inequalities by their relative importance in total income (size effect) and their distribution over the population (distribution effect). Thus, for a same reduction of income inequalities, it is possible to increase the distribution effect while decreasing the size of transfers. Results point to the fact that the reduction of income inequalities is mostly due to the size effect of transfers, suggesting that it is possible to battle more efficiently against income inequalities by reinforcing the targeting of transfers.
