Abstract

Despite the coverage of pregnancy care by the French Social security system, some women do not always resort to this care. The aim of the paper is to identify the characteristics of these women, by using the 2010 National Perinatal Survey. Whatever the type of medical care they do not resort to (compulsory medical consults, prenatal screening tests) socioeconomic factors have a great effect on failing to seek treatment. This result confirms the existence of social inequalities of access already highlighted for other types of care. This situation seems to result first and foremost from financial problems?. However, we managed to identify non-monetary determinants such as psycho-sociological factors and we show that risk behaviors (smoking, drinking) during pregnancy highly contribute to unmet needs for health care.
