Abstract

This article offers a critical analysis of the usual arguments in favour of tuition fees : i) the iniquity of the French system, ii) the efficiency of fees to select, guide and encourage the effort, iii) the financing of the university. We defend the thesis that, due to these costs and due to debt burden, potential students could drop out of higher education, change their vocational orientation or behaviour on the labour market. We show that tuition fees do not guarantee equity, efficiency and resources increase for universities.
