Dispositions et usages de l’automobile et des transports publics entre 1994 et 2011. Analyse des cas de Berne, Genève et Lausanne

Abstract

Mode shift from the car towards public transport is an explicit public policy objective in many urban areas across Europe. Despite some progress over the past decade, such a transformation has long been thwarted by ingrained behaviour on the part of the public. Using data from a survey carried out among residents of the center or direct city suburbs well serviced by public transportation in Berne, Geneva and Lausanne in 1994 and 2011, this contribution presents the evolution in attitudes and effective transport behaviours, as well as the linkages between the image of each transport mode, public policy provision on the supply side, and mode use in everyday life. The differences between the three conurbations included in the survey are reviewed, in the light of specific transport policy profiles which are associated with different modal split outcomes.
