Abstract

This paper is a study of the joint impact of macroeconomic conditions and of party endorsements on the result of parties? candidates in local elections in France. Our sample covers the 1983-2001 period, and around 600 towns. We first test for economic variables, and find that the electorate penalizes the incumbent party for unemployment or for a high misery index. We then turn to fixed effects estimates to review the impact of partisanship on local elections. The presence of an incumbency premium is confirmed. We also find a strong impact of endorsement, confirming the presence of partisanship in local elections results, and we exhibit a tiredness effect for mayors running successive mandates.
