Transports urbains à Montréal : évolutions des référentiels et enjeux d'une politique durable

Abstract

The automobile has become a deeply rooted part of Western life, but the reduction of automobile use features prominently on the political agendas of many European cities. Some appear to have found a solution to this problem, deploying a variety of traffic restriction instruments, such as parking management, tolls etc. or through urban and regional planning policies. What is the nature of the cognitive references supporting these policies ? Are they built on the urban spatial structure or fed with cultural references ? For this article, we shall use the example of Montreal to show the complex make-up of public action in this policy area and the persisting paradoxes which actually drive it. We shall show that Montreal?s urban transport policy is undoubtedly exemplary, but that it is at serious risk due to a lack of funding.
