Abstract

The analysis of the elementary process of euro coins diffusion indicates that networks of individuals play a major role in the international circulation of coins. Through regular surveys realised on representative samples of French population since beginning of 2002, the Euro Spatial Diffusion Observatory (ESDO) try to monitor the spatial diffusion of foreign coins in France in order to gain information on international mobility inside Euroland. The aim of the paper is to examine the various factor which can influence this diffusion of foreign coins. A gravity model of spatial interaction is not sufficient to explain the distributions of euro coins in France, which suggests that specific forms of mobility (not so strongly related to distance to borders) has an influence, like tourism. But euro coins diffusion is the result of a wide number of influences and cannot be therefore be used as a direct indicator of a specific factor of mobility like tourism. Classification JEL : C42, C53, E5, F22, R12, Z13.
