L’enjeu de l’emploi dans la régulation des jeux de hasard et d’argent en France : une analyse entrée-sortie

Abstract

This article uses an input-output analysis based on national accounts data to shed light on employment issues in the context of the regulation of gambling in France. This analysis estimates the total number of jobs attributable to gambling activity for 2017 at 46,285, of which 20,170 are direct and 26 115 are indirect. It also highlights that consumption expenditure on gambling generates fewer jobs in the economy than consumption expenditure in other domestic sectors. A reallocation of household gambling expenditure to other sectors is thus beneficial for domestic employment (440 jobs created for a reallocation of one billion euros, or 2,658 jobs created if the gambling sector ?disappears?). Beyond the estimates, which are necessarily dependent on the methodological choices made, the interest of this work is to emphasize that the potential impact of gambling regulation on employment is much less significant than the operators? communication elements suggest.
