Pourquoi Vincent a-t-il moins de chances d’obtenir un logement qu’Émilie ? Une analyse des causes de la discrimination à l’égard des noms masculins

Abstract

In this article, we have studied the extent and especially the causes of discrimination against male candidates during the first stage of the rental process (i.e. when individuals ask to visit the apartment) through a meta-analysis of 23 correspondence tests conducted in 15 OECD countries, representing a total of 110,000 emails sent to owners or real estate agents. Female names are 13 % more likely to receive a positive response from agents than male names and this result is invariably present in OECD countries. Female candidates, however, appear to face first order statistical discrimination regarding their financial stability, but this negative effect is more than offset by statistical discrimination suffered by male applicants because of their supposed higher-risk behavior. Finally, it seems that differential treatment between men and women is not significantly higher for individuals with a foreign-sounding name than for individuals with a typical name of the country tested.
