Commerce international et diversification économique

Abstract

We start this article with a discussion of the arguments in favour of economic diversification policies, and we revisit the analysis of the gains of diversification in the light of new trade theory analyses. Then we study the factors that determine diversification, in a cross-section econometric framework based on data collected for some forty developed, emerging and transition economies. Beyond the inverted-U shape relation between economic development and diversification, which has been explored earlier in the literature, we show that economic diversification is linked to new forms of trade specialisation, which are intra-industry trade and the international segmentation of production processes. Instead of being associated with protectionism, a successful diversification policy needs therefore to be based on an active participation in globalisation.
