Retombées économiques des jeux olympiques. Splendeurs et misères des études d’impact

Abstract

Impact studies are now a useful tool for informing policymakers and taxpayers. However, to remain credible they must comply with certain best practices, including correctly choosing the targeted geographical area, privileging a short timeframe, and using an impact multiplier that is not too large. Unlike short-term studies, long-term studies tend not to be very convincing, nor are the assessments of impacts on employment. Keeping in mind these methodological caveats, we can expect the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to have an impact of just over 4 billion euros, a figure that should be kept in perspective given a cost to the taxpayer estimated just before the Games at more than 3.1 billion.
