Abstract

This article analyzes cycles of credit and banking activities in the euro area. The accommodative stance of ECB monetary policy raises questions about the risks to bank instability. The results suggest neither a credit boom nor an excessive contraction over the recent period. While credit dynamics are more favorably oriented relative to its historical trend in France and Germany, the cycle does not show an excessive increase recently. Spain can be considered as a special case since characterized by low credit relative to GDP, while credit relative to capital and reserves of the banking system is at a historically high level, suggesting excessive risk-taking. JEL: E5.
