Abstract

In 2009, in France, nearly 3 of 4 of the people receiving benefits from the general pension system retired at (or before) 60, which is the legal minimum age required. We discuss, in this paper, the arguments in favour of an increase of this age. We also put forward that increase of the legal age is less satisfactory, on the point of view of justice, both at intra and inter generation?s levels, than a rule based over affiliation duration increase. The reforms of the retirements system passed on 1993 and 2003, combined with socio-economic trends (increase of the age of entry in the labour force, more volatility in careers), should lead to an important increase of the average retirement age in the fifteen next years. This will not required an increase of the legal minimum age for retirement. JEL classification: J20. J26.
