Abstract

What is the impact of international relocation on French unemployment? Is there any need for policy answers? For some economists, relocation has a limited impact on unemployment. Job losses occur only in specific sectors or regions. This may require specific policy support, but has no negative macroeconomic impact. For some economists France suffers from insufficient attractiveness due to excessive wage costs. Others suggest French producers should turn to higher value added products in face of rising competition from emerging Asia and CEEC?s; more public aid is required to support education, research and innovation. Some economists stress the need for an active macroeconomic policy, while some others are in favour of strengthening free competition.
