L’Asie centrale sous le coup de la guerre en Ukraine : conséquences et perspectives

During the thirty years since their independence, the republics of Central Asia have built their own national narratives and moved away from each other despite their membership to numerous common regional organizations. When President Mirziyoyev came to power, negotiations over the deepening of regional cooperation resumed, before the Covid-19 pandemic weakened their economies. As these countries are landlocked, their foreign trade is made more expensive. The departure of American troops from Afghanistan, the return of the Taliban to power and the launch of the special operation ? the war ? waged by Russia in Ukraine convinced the leaders of these countries that they must cooperate in order to address these external threats. This study aims to analyze the policies implemented by each of these republics to deal with these challenges. While hydrocarbon producers are in principle being favoured by the rise in their prices, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are seeing their economic environments disrupted and will probably have to talk to the IMF to relieve their budgetary situations.
