Abstract

After the launching of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the development of container rail transportation spurred trade between China and Europe. This emblematic project for developing New Silk Roads has recently encountered two ?external? shocks: the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army in 2022. What is the impact of these shocks? Adopting an approach via the geography of transportation, this analysis highlights the contrary effects of these events on transcontinental traffic, which increased during the pandemic and has fallen off since the start of the war. Light is shed on the shift towards Asia of the activities of China Railway Express.
