L’impact des dépenses publiques consacrées au sport sur les médailles olympiques

Abstract

Each year, a significant portion of government spending goes to sports at the professional or amateur level. A number of analysts argue that these investments greatly contribute to the success of a country at the Olympics. We present an econometric analysis aiming at estimating the causal effect of public investment in sports on the number of medals won by a country. We use panel counting models with fixed effects and instrumental variable. According to our selected specifications, the elasticity of the number of medals won by a country at the Summer Olympics with respect to its public investment in sport varies between 0.23 and 0.38.
